Remarks at the Chesapeake City Council Reorganizational Meeting
By Team Debbie | July 2, 2008
Tonight begins yet another new chapter for the City of Chesapeake. I am honored and humbled to sit here tonight and to have the opportunity to be a small part in the future of our city. I also sincerely thank all of those who put their trust in me and will do my best to represent all of the citizens with integrity and fairness.
I would like to introduce the members of my family who are here tonight. My husband, Ron; our daughter Courtney and her husband Kevin Wolfe; and Courtney and Kevin’s three sons-Jack, Sam and Thomas Wolfe. Here with us in spirit are our daughters Caroline and Hilary, as well as Hilary’s husband Doug.
Last Sunday I attended a patriotic program at a church in our neighborhood. It was an inspiring reminder that America is more than a geographic label and being an American is more than where you live. I hope we’re all inspired to always see ourselves in the context of being Americans first; to never take our freedoms for granted and to accept our differences knowing we are bound together by a higher purpose.
This week we celebrate the Declaration of Independence. Adopted on July 4th, 1776, it represents more than words on a piece of parchment. This revered document continues to embody the spirit that lives in all our hearts and has shaped this great country ever since it was first presented in Philadelphia more than two centuries ago.
We are here tonight because of the spirit and determination of those men and women who risked everything to found a free country. The Spirit of Freedom gave rise to the ideals that have helped to define us as a people. The American Spirit has been forged by hope, hard work and sacrifice to achieve the dreams fostered by our freedoms.
All over our country, towns and cities, states and Congress face challenges we have not seen in recent years. Our challenges shouldn’t be seen as insurmountable. After all, Americans respond to challenge and adversity with an indomitable spirit and will to find solutions that work. We need only to look to the kitchen tables of America to renew the “can-do” spirit that has always set us apart as a nation and as a people.
In Chesapeake, we can embrace the present and the future and employ our very special “can-do” attitude to make sure that, together, we meet the challenges and expectations shared by our citizens. We will accomplish that goal by always remembering we represent and serve those who trusted us to make decisions for a better future.
Thank you for being here tonight. May God continue to bless you and bless America.
